About Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

 

Founded Wednesday, January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-Letter organization established by African American college-educated women. They were resolute that their college experiences should be as meaningful and productive as possible. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded to apply that determination. Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Alpha Kappa Alpha has 20 founders, Anna Easter Brown, Beluah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Diggs Slowe, Marie Woolfolk Taylor, Norma Elizabeth Boyd, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Alice P. Murray, Sarah Meriweather Nutter, Joanna Berry Shields, Carrie Snowden, Harriet Josephine Terry, Nellie Quander, Julia Evangeline Brooks, Nelli Pratt Russell, and Minnie Beatrice Smith.
